24-month STEM Extensions: It’s Complicated!

Starting May 10th, individuals on student visas who have graduated with a STEM degree and will be working for a qualified employer, may apply for an extension of optional practical training (OPT) for 24 months.  Individuals who already have a 17-month STEM extension must apply for the additional 7 months by August 8, 2016.  New STEM extension regulations require the employer become much more involved in the process than before.  Designated School Officials (DSOs) are now advising students/employers to retain an attorney to assist with STEM extensions. Fallon Bixby Cheng & Lee is ready to help with the application process.  Please contact our firm if you are interested in a STEM extension or have questions.
